I am a developer, climber and glaciologist
Hi, my name is Sjur and I'm a programmer, teacher, geologist and glaciologist. Currently, I am working on glacier modeling at the Biological Department at the University of Bergen. I like meeting new people, learning new things and I have a number of varying interest. As a hobby photographer I have learnt to develop my own film, and I have documented my field work and other travels. I also really enjoy film making and editing. I often work on my own projects, coding on small games or app ideas.
After a bachelor's in Computer Engineering, I wanted to work, climb and travel before continuing my studies. And that's exactly what I did. In 2018 I took the bullet train around China, camped in the bushes of Eastern Australia and bouldered for a few months in Rocklands, South Africa. When I returned I started a five year combined masters program in geology, mathematics and teaching. My programming background gave me an advantage in several aspects of the program, and I eventually chose a thesis project with programming in focus: Numerical modelling of ice sheet movement.
I very much enjoy working with GIS, processing data and making maps and figures. Take a look at my master's thesis for some example figures i have created.
My master thesis concerned the flow of ice over a deep fjord, Numerical Modelling was the main applied method. I have also worked with other minor modelling projects in different programming languages.
I consider myself a creative person and I like poetry, writing and making music. Take a look at my personal projects for a few digital examples.
Flexible on work location and work environment. I have a knack for hiking, camping and many different sports.
I have experience with multiple languages including Python, Matlab, C++, C#, Java, Fortran. Additionally, I have practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git version control.
I am very interested in the linux work environment and I am currently experimenting with my own dotfiles. Also, I have automated plenty of my workflow with shell scripting.
I have experience in parallel computing on the university servers (NREC) as well as the HPC system: Sigma2.
As a hobby I build keyboards from scratch, stemming from a higher than average interest in typing.
A small collection of analogue shots. I shoot and develop my own black and white negatives.
An old blog that I did with my friend Marie. We traveled, climbed, took photos and wrote about it. I'm planning to port and preserve the blog here, currently it is just a preview.
